TikTok Donates $132,000 to ASAS Hawaii
As schools across the State remain closed, one of the greatest challenges facing many parents is how to feed their keiki. Evidenced by the long lines at recent food distribution events, the effects of COVID-19 have taken their toll on Hawaiʻi families. TikTok is partnering with After-School All-Stars Hawaii (ASAS Hawaii) to provide support for families in need with a donation of $132,000.
TikTok’s donation has enabled ASAS Hawaii to partner with local grocery stores, Foodland Hawaii, KTA Super Stores and Malama Market, to provide gift cards for families of students who regularly participated in the After-School All-Stars Hawaii programs this past year at its 10 program sites on Oʻahu and Hawaiʻi Island.
“Our programs focus on serving students in Title I districts and those communities are already very vulnerable. While we can’t run programs as usual, although are providing online resources for are students, we are always looking for ways we can continue to support our All-Star students and families,” said Paula Fitzell, President and CEO of After-School All-Stars Hawaii. “We appreciate TikTok’s generosity and the support of Foodland/Malama Market and KTA and what it means for our All-Star ʻohana.”
Gift cards will be distributed from May 13 to May 19 at the various school sites. Families receiving a gift card will be contacted directly by After-School All-Stars Hawaii with details regarding the pick up.
The donation is part of a total $3M donation TikTok has made to After-School All-Stars chapters across the United States. Families in cities across the U.S. with ASAS chapters received food vouchers and gift cards to be used on food and other essential items through local grocery store partners.
All-Star Athletic League Kicks Off on Oʻahu
After-School All-Stars Hawaii launched a new program on Oʻahu, the All-Stars Athletic League (ASAL) in conjunction with its Sports as a Hook initiative. Recognizing the need for a comprehensive and organized league for middle and intermediate school, ASAL was conceived to focus on creating strong student-athletes, both in the classroom and on the field/court. In addition, ASAS Hawaii provided support and training for sports coaches. All seven of the Oʻahu ASAS Hawaii sites competed and for the school year 2019-20, the sports played were: volleyball, basketball, and pylon football.
