After-School All-Stars Ohio Receives Walmart Foundation Grant for Service Learning
The grant will be used to fund service learning activities for local students

COLUMBUS, OH – The Walmart Foundation and the Ohio Advisory Council awarded After-School All-Stars Ohio a grant for $25,000 to help fund service learning projects for more than 400 elementary and middle school aged children. The grant was awarded at the Mid-Ohio Foodbank, who also was awarded a grant from the Walmart Foundation.

“Community service is a major cornerstone of our program,” said Aslyne Rodriguez, Co-Executive Director of After-School All-Stars Ohio. “Many of the service projects that we perform help our students to realize that the skills they have learned can be applied in making their communities a better place.”

With the funds, ASAS Ohio will fund “Life.Service.Action,” an After-School All-Stars national initiative. Through this initiative, ASAS Ohio is able to promote community service, student leadership and applying new skills to help address community concerns.
Each year, ASAS Ohio students perform service to celebrate events including Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Make a Difference Day and Global Youth Service Day.  In the past year, ASAS Ohio students completed 725 service hours in a wide array of projects including: organizing donations for local food pantries, participating in school clean ups, volunteering at local assisted living facilities and planting urban gardens.

“By providing our students with opportunities for service, we are teaching them that they are not only part of a local community but also a global community and that it is important to give back to both,” said Rodriguez.

The Walmart Foundation strives to provide opportunities that improve the lives of individuals in the community including their customers and associates. Through financial contributions, in-kind donations and volunteerism, the Walmart Foundation supports initiatives focused on enhancing opportunities in four main focus areas including education, workforce development, environmental sustainability, and health and wellness.
