Mammoth Mountain Hosts After-School All-Stars Youth and Friends to ski with

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger

Mammoth Mountain, CA – For the third year, Mammoth Mountain hosted fifty children from After-School All-Stars’ (ASAS) Hawaii, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Diego and San Francisco Bay Area chapters, along with the founder of ASAS, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.  This past weekend, middle school students from Kalakaua, Dole, Jarrett, Washington Middle School and King Intermediate enjoyed two days of skiing, snowboarding and other activities on the slopes of Mammoth Mountain.

Attendees were hosted by Mammoth Mountain Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Rusty Gregory, and treated to all of the things that make springtime in Mammoth great: skiing and snowboarding, sunshine and crowd-free slopes. The kids enjoyed lodging, rental equipment, group ski and snowboard lessons, gondola rides and group meals courtesy of Mammoth Mountain. It will be an especially memorable trip for the ASAS students as most of them have never even seen snow!

The children were treated to a special banquet and career panel featuring Mammoth Mountain employees of all levels as guest speakers. Professionals in hospitality, food service, marketing, hotel management and other areas discussed their career paths and what their jobs entail.  This program for the students is part of ASAS’s Career Explorations Opportunity (C.E.O.) initiative, which inspires underserved students to explore their passions and career options.

“Rusty and the Mammoth staff always do a fantastic job on this special trip,” said Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. “This is a once in a lifetime experience for our students. For some, it’s the first time they get to play in the snow. I have always believed the best way to help kids achieve their dreams is to show them what’s possible and that’s exactly what this is about.”

On Sunday morning, Rusty Gregory and Governor Schwarzenegger hosted a press conference to speak on the importance of after-school programs, with ASAS students and invited guests and media in attendance.  After the press conference, ASAS students joined Governor Schwarzenegger on a couple of ski runs down the slopes of Mammoth.

About After-School All-Stars – After-School All-Stars was founded by Arnold Schwarzenegger almost 20 years ago to provide children with after school programs that are fun for kids and also keep them safe and help them achieve success in school and life.  The After-School All-Stars program serves 81,000 youth annually through after-school and summer programs in 12 cities across the country.  Experts agree that children who participate in after-school programs are three times less likely to skip classes or experiment with marijuana or other drugs.  These children are also less likely to drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes or engage in sexual activity.  To learn more, visit www.as-as.org.
