The After-School All-Stars Hawaii program keeps kids safe and off the streets, and engaged in school and helping their communities. All-Star participants from Dole Middle School in Kalihi will work side by side with other community partners such as Weed and Seed, the Honolulu Police Department, YMCA, etc. to clean up the Kalihi Valley District Park. This is an effort to promote service learning through the All-Star program, in addition to organizing a community project with various stakeholders. This will be an ongoing project and is open to those who are interested in beautifying Kalihi Valley.
Founded by Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1990, the programs have been designed to prepare middle school youth (6th, 7th, 8th graders) for high school, college, and the 21st century by offering academic support, enrichment opportunities and health/fitness activities. After-School All-Stars serves 80,000 youth annually through after school and summer programs in 12 chapters across the country. Hawaii is the newest chapter formed in 2009.
